Looks to be a strong box. You can view a few similar on this site searching with the phrase "1897 Vanderman Co. railroad strong box"

Above is the patent for the Box . The Grinnell Inc. Company was and still is a fire extinguisher/suppression company. Just a hunch- I suspect that they would have possibly used or shipped pipe elbows, fittings etc. at the time in these very strong industrialized shipping boxes. More than likely they would have ordered them without Vanderman's name on them and possibly placed or ordered there own name upon them, through some form of agreement.I have seen the name on two other Vanderman style trunks.

Vanderman also had plumbing company as is evident in the above advertising.
Thanks for all the input. The one thing I see different from the patents provided is that mine has 6 handles on it. Anyone have any idea of what kind of value this may have?
You will notice the same number of handles in the advertisement in my previous post, it was an option at the time and there were 3 different sizes that I have seen . As for value we tend not to use this forum for that. There are many examples of this trunk on the internet just search : Vanderman trunk images. Prices tend to be within certain parameters based on condition. Thanks for the post.
