I still do not know which decor should be assigned to Persica and which to Pavonia. Mostly, as a Persica, the combination of violet and yellow is called. According to source "Centralblatt 1894, S. 481ff" (Neuwirth: Loetz Austria 1900), Persica would have Roth (red) and Pavonia heliotropp spreading on yellow glass. So maybe this way ?:

photo 2: Pavonia (10.6 x 10.2) - very thin layer of heliotropp glass

photo 4: Persica ? (24.6 x 13 cm) red glass spreading on yellow glass - DEK I / 124
That may be so, but it can be quite different. I'm sorry if I make a confusion in a generally clear case.

The assignment of these two decors has been in question for some time. Currently, there are only two sources where either the Persica or Pavonia decors are mentioned: Ricke 1 pg 68 & 352 and Band 2, pgs 384 & 559. (A 3rd source, Neuwirth 1989a, pg 251, is repeated on Ricke's pg 68). The description for the violet & yellow vase shown in plate 15, pg 68, Band 1, Ricke states that it is "probably Persica". The description later goes on to mention "Persica or Pavonia: red, the latter a heliotrope spreading glass.", which, is certainly confusing. Then Ricke 1,pg 352, defines Pavonia as spreading Heliotrope on yellow glass with a burned on gold, shimmering iridescence and relief decoration." These same attributes are reflected in vase 15, pg 68. Cantz 2003 mentions "Persica" on pg 287. The vase shown there is similar to the examples shown on Loetz.com for Persica. However, there are no production note listings for the decor "Persica" in any of the Loetz published archive resources. Pavonia is mentioned in Band 2 as a decor produced for van Hauten using PN I-3288 & 714/927. Based on this information, it appears that unless we can conduct further research into the Loetz archives for additional information on these two decors, we may not be able to document either of these two decors any time soon.
Deb, thank you for your analysis. I agree that without further new information, Pavonia and Persica will not be precisely identified.
