Yesterday I was surprised to read, here on C.W. Welz production being dismissed as 'a bunch of miniature pieces and some generic shapes of a larger size as well, specially in the Tango style.' I find that difficult to believe as it doesn't chime with my experience. Like all glass houses Welz made items of all sizes to appeal to all pockets. Like all glass houses Welz was a business where all sales fed the bottom line, the be all and end all for any business.

The images show that some of my pieces of Welz are too tall to fit the shelving/dresser and had to be placed on top, but also many others of medium and small sizes. I apologise for these now outdated images as I couldn't get far enough away to take good photographs. However they are good enough to demonstrate the great variation in sizes.......and and also that only a small percentage are Tango glass!

My largest piece of Welz is a light shade, 28 cm. in diameter, image one.
My tallest pieces of Welz come in at 31 cm. including the triple thorn vase in image four.
My smallest Welz pieces are two open salts at 6.5 cm. tall, and they are posted here on C.W.
Welz also produced cut crystal and their largest piece in that area, a documented piece as it was awarded a prestigious prize, was in the region of 90 cm. tall.

Sweeping statements without supporting evidence rarely hold water and usually bring other points of view, as here. I might add that I have commented on only one of several such unsupported sweeping statements.

Great collection of Welz. Varied décors, shapes and sizes.....

I too find far reaching generalities with no supporting evidence to be at best disingenuous, and at worst, grossly uninformative and misleading.

Hi Phil, I'm not sure about lovely, but I'm hoping to address the overcrowding in the not too distant future. Less is more after all :)
    7. sklo42 sklo42, 5 years ago
And of course, welzebub, the very fact that there's an awful lot Welz out there makes acquiring a varied collection that much easier :)

Thank you, Newfld. Clearly there's something about glass en masse that triggers comments :)

Wonderful collection,Peggy, which is always a great assistance for my collecting.
Btw,do you count this small yellow vase from the lowest right shelf in pic.3 as Welz either?
    12. sklo42 sklo42, 5 years ago
Yes I do, I'll email you.

Thank you so much, Valentino :)
I rarely post whole displays as I feel it's akin to boasting. However I'd taken photos of my display shelves in advance of moving for my own purposes. Thus when someone made a completely erroneous statement about Welz production I was, I think, able to refute it visually. A picture's worth a thousand words!

What a terrific post! I *loved* seeing your collection, Peggy! Your have your pieces wonderfully displayed, and seeing them all together just strikes home the diversity of Welz's production. And your lamp shade is just like the cherry on top, too! :) Thanks for sharing your collection!

That lampshade proves Welz could hold its own with any prominent glass company of its era! I would be privileged to display that in my home!

A great post for so many reasons!
Your collection is wonderfully varied - reflecting perfectly the eclectic & innovative Welz design ethos. They really did create something for everyone.
The light fitting is pure glamour - lovely to see it aglow, highlighting the decor.
Also especially loving all those big vases on the top of the cabinets - all the applied "snakes" & rigarees - so lavish!
And do not worry about "boasting" with regard to your collection - I like to think of it as sharing the love...

What a Fabulous collection Peggy and displayed so well! Far from a bunch of generic miniatures, perhaps direct the author to these pages..

Alan2310 No one in my family is interesting in inheriting the glass. I do intend to thin it out soon, though I'll be continuing to collect as the hunt is such fun !!!

Sammyz, I could barely believe my luck in finding such a large Welz shade, particularly as I have several other pieces in the same décor. Your comment was greatly appreciated.

      - 'a bunch of miniature pieces and some generic shapes of a larger size as well, specially in the Tango style.'

I couldn’t disagree more, Franz Welz as documented has an incredible array of shapes and the documentation shows these decor in larger sizes. They encompass a wide array of textures as well. I think some people consider brightly colored cased glass decors (like lines and spots) to be tango - I do think that could be said though.... tango is not just two color after all.

I do love generalities as long as they are positive:
1- Welz is incredibly creative and advanced in the art of cased glass and glass application techniques.
2- Welz made some incredibly intricate decors considering how thin the glass is
3- Welz was a leader in technology - especially the pieces that utilize the gadget
4- Welz is unpredictable -they produce some rare shapes in documented decors
5- Welz produced incredibly colorful Czech glass

I think quality speaks for itself when yo see some Welz prices going for much more than they were a few years ago

Great collection Peggy, does it ever get hard to decide which cabinet to put the new piece? Nouveau or Deco?

My comment as no intent to be funny.
Just honest has all the time when commenting on any post.
I have no ideals why you use my regular CW name, as we know each other for quite some time. Oh well.

Thank you, kralik1928, comment 34 was greatly appreciated, as was comment 22, in much the same vein. And yes there are actual production sheets and many examples of cross referencing posted here that prove Welz produced on a scale and of a quality equivalent to their contemporaries. Mostly I ignore the sniping but in this instance I decided to have my say.
Having found an example of Welz in iridescent green I've just bought an example of a three ribbed ball feet vase in milk glass. These purchases couldn't have been so identified without Craig's work.....but these are the finds I enjoy most!

Hi Jericho, this is only the Welz of course! In my head I divide them into Deco and Victoriana (which extends into the Edwardian period.... if we're going to be nitpicky!

It never gets hard 'cos there's no one to argue. I just go on how they look, knowing full well there are overlaps, and that I will have placed some incorrectly.

When it comes to Kralik I divide those into Deco and Nouveau. I think you can mix Deco Welz and Deco Kralik in the same display without a clash of style. However I doubt I could mix pre 1915 Kralik and Welz without it offending my eye. I totally accept others will think differently. Probably says more about me than anything else :)

As to those 'generic Tango shapes' they were in the kitchen lol

Hi Alan, I had no idea that I was using your full C.W. name in any way differently from the way I use the full username of other people. If I reply to several comments at one time I use full usernames so that all can see to whom I am replying. But I'll mend my ways as it's true we have known each other a while now :)
