We were given this .could you give us sum information about this sword.we found a year on it 1853 but there is a name but we dont know how to clean it .

The reverse curve of the blade is so that it isn't in the war while loading a muzzleloader. This is for the 1853 or 1856 English Enfield rifle, cal. .577. Many Enfields were sold to the Confederates, as some to the Federalist. What markings do you see. One confirmed Confederate one sold for $1,500.
There are several ways I've found to clean off rust without hurting the metal. Cut a small piece off of those green scouring pads & use it with a light oil. When the oil gets dirty, wipe it off and apply fresh oil. The rust particles in the oil will scratch the metal. If you need something else, try the sharp edge of a piece of aluminium or brass, using the same oil-rust warnings. Brass on old weapons is preferred unpolished by most collectors, as they like the patina. I'm curious what area you found this ?
