This week I'd like to share the second trunk I was able to acquire. This is a beautiful oak slat Clinton wall trunk, manufactured in Clinton Massachusetts. These hinges (Patented Valentines day 1890!) allow this trunk to be placed directly against the wall and still be opened. They are really pretty amazing! I have included a photo of an earlier version of these hinges with no clear date of patent. I think we can assume they were from the later 1880's. I wish I could include a video of how the lid moves when this trunk is opened. It is missing the tray and the key (which was pretty easily remedied with a little help from Jim Cardoza). Its a cool trunk & I'm happy to add it to my growing collection. In my research I came across this article about the company which I found to be pretty cool. https://www.telegram.com/article/20140228/coulter01/302289672

    Thanks for looking!

Very nice BigD, I really like this one, if it hadn't been so far away from me I would have snatched this one up, with a little TLC this will be a very nice addition to your growing collection, I'm telling you this is the start of an addiction that there is no cure for, Brian.

Great find there BigD338 !!! Its the same as my first wood slat trunk find. Now the second wood slat by Clinton that I have seen, besides the one Drill pointed out for sale on Craigs list...unless you snagged it.

It's funny, I have yet to find that particular patent after quite a while hunting for it. (years) Clintons wall Trunk, patent hinge(Clinton Mass) eludes me. One of the reasons very well could be the above image. Which is an older patent.
Excelsior Wall trunk Patent Oct.10 1873 H.T. Day Westboro Mass.
It sure looks very similar, and probably functions the same. It could be plausible
that the patent was sold to Clinton Wall trunk or expired when Excelsior went out of business. After all both companies are located in the same state.

There were many Wall trunk hinge patents in the 1800's Here are just a few that we
all might come across. Just thought I would share some for those that may be interested.
      (Hope they all post)

Wow — thanks for sharing all that information!!

Where do you find all this stuff?!? Lol. Yes the Clinton hinge does appear to be very similar to the Excelsior that you shared. So much history!

      Thanks for sharing Drill!

Hi, this is such a gorgeous trunk - extremely rare to find the wall trunk as an oak slat. I missed one at Brimfield Flea market last spring by about 10 minutes when another fellow trunker bought it from the dealer for $100 - I almost cried. Happy collecting!!

Thank you for your comments! It’s a pretty cool trunk, I need to get going on the restoration on this one sometime soon!

      Cheers
