In a past career I made clothes for musicians, rockabilly friends and vintage shops. This was the 2nd shirt for Phil Hansen. He played stand-up bass in a band called Swinging Spurs. Phil was chunky and couldn't find off-the-rack shirts. We met and I brought some of my (MANY vintage books, patterns) and talked about blah, colors, fabric, blah, blah, his vibe - you know, artsy stuff.

He didn't have a logo and he just wanted something on the shirt to relate to a bass, so I came up with the double S and spurs and the strings and cleft? shapes. I rarely see a man cry for joy. When he saw this shirt he cried. He didn't know about the initials on the cuff. I have to say I was very proud of this shirt.

Stats: 1950's pattern graded to his size, wool gabardine, fake suede appliques - sewn, not glued. Green soutache and embroidery, traditional snap closures.

I took these pictures at Oceanside, CA with a Kodak throwaway camera in 1999. Geez and sorry! Phil, thank you.

Thank you Watchsearcher - yes, it's piping, also on yoke and cuffs and the brown trim with green embroidery was my creation too. Geez, no wonder I'm blind now.

Kevin - thank you for your nice comment, that's soutache trim, less than 1/8" wide with a "ditch" to stitch in. I went to fashion college for 2 years specializing in pattern-making. AND, the entire 15 yrs. I lived in San Diego I was involved in an Adult Continuing Ed class for sewing. I met 3 of my best friends there - we had love of sewing in common. They are still my best friends 20 years later! :-)

Phil - Thank you! I did a lot of research of vintage cowboy - YET, I only have one 1940's gabardine cowboy shirt. I made 2 other vintage cowboy shirts. Luckily I can reshoot and post as I didn't sell them. My inspiration of course was watching Grand Ole Opry and Nudie. But I also have at least 20 50's-80's sewing patterns that I referred to for correct vibe. Plus, the Gene Autry Cowboy museum here in LA. :-) (now called Autry Museum of the American West. GREAT!!

Kyra - thank you. I don't remember why I didn't have better photos. I think Phil brought them and he was having mimosas with my dear friend Jill at this beach....

Jenni - thank you, I don't know what happened to Phil. He's 110 miles south and I mainly stay up here listening to favorite bands. I am a huge live music fan. I didn't pursue custom work because sadly I'm too nervous to do it on my own. I must have a weekly paycheck and health insurance. LOL

Friends thank you for loves: Fort, Hel1, artfoot, Mike, Thomas, hunterqlee, Manikin, yougottahavestuff, Broochman.

Never underestimate your talent! I used to sew and have to say, I am not sure I could have pulled this off! You have an eye for so many things, especially your choices of colors and fashion. You are as talented as you are kind! And that's no lie! xoxo

Wow, you were not a SO-SO sewer, you are a SUPER SEWER !!

Now say that 6 times fast....LOL
    12. valentino97 valentino97, 2 years ago
Share - thanks again. What you and our other dear CW friends don't realize, I'm also listening to rock, country, soul, blues as loud as possible in the background when I'm creating. Music also inspires me, plus no one hears when I cuss because I screwed up something.

Rose - I am a super sewer 6 times fast! ha ha....oh boy, I wish it was that easy. I also want to rip most of the things I make. I have to put them aside before I do that. Then come back later maybe a few days or a year and say "okay, not so bad, I should finish".

I need to get out of vintage jewelry more often...
You are a truly talented seamstress. My Mother sewed beautifully. Me? I can hem, and sew on a button. That’s it. ( my Mother would flip over my work, she was a perfectionist.) Took her one full day to put the sleeves on my Communion dress!’
Never had the patience or knack to sew.
How long did it take you to make this amazing shirt? ...when looking at it, I can see why he cried. My Mother would of approved...wholeheartedly!

Eileen, I always sewed 4-H, then design and pattern making classes, was part of 2 different artist coop stores. I think it probably took me a month to get all the components, meet with Phil and then finish it. I can't sew like this anymore, but I can still make A-line skirts (my favorite go-to) and simple messenger bags. My and your Mother enjoyed sewing and they WERE serious about it. Thank you for noticing this. XOXO
