Photo 4 is from the Vincenc Kutac article in the Tschechoslowakische Glasrevue v. 16, no. 3, 1961. It concerns the names of the colours used by Zeleznebrodske Sklo in their 1961 collection:

    OCEANIT
    ROYALIT
    CITRIN
    SMARAGD

They are the four colours used for the ZBS collection of glass.

The vase No. 70038 was designed by Frantisek Zemek .... one of my favourite glass designers of all time. He was born in 1913 at Zlatno u Lucence, Slovensko and tragically died young in a road accident in 1960 at Sumperk.

He worked at many of the Czech glass works including Mstisov and Rueckl. He won a scholarship from the Prague Kunstgewerbemuseums to work in the Glashuette Rueckl in Nizbor.

However his work in the glass industry began much earlier as an engraver. Talented, he worked his way up to be a designer of some famous glass objects at a variety of factories. His work at ZBS began in 1950 and he worked at Skrdlovice and at ZBS until 1955. Later he went to Mstisov and produced designs similar to this one with the applied ‘tadpoles’ one of which I will post separately.

But this design dates to 1957 according to Mark Hill : “This particular vase, devised in 1957, is an early example of his designs and was deemed important enough to be included by Josef Raban in his landmark book ‘Modern Bohemian Glass’, published in 1963. As well as being typical of Zemek’s hot-worked designs with its curving, organic form and applied trails, it also hints at machinery with its resemblance to propellers and spun screw threads. For its date, as well as for its country of origin, this design is highly Modern and progressive.

The example shown in Raban’s book was made at Mstisov, but this example is more likely to have been made at Zelezny Brod during the 1960s judging by the yellow (Citrine) and brown colouring and the precise form. They’re not all that common, and can be found in a range of colours, sizes and variations in proportions. I really rate Zemek as a good buy for the future, and think this early design is well worth looking out for. Expect to pay anything from £5 to £30 right now.”

Design 70038 was produced successfully at ZBS from 1961 and I suppose are a posthumous tribute to his genius.

So the vase was made by both ZBS and Mistisov, but the production at ZBS was after his passing as a tribute, as an homage so to speak, to his time at ABS. Any suggestion that it is a Klinger design, or that Zemek's vase was copied by another designer and produced at ZBS would be incorrect. Do I understand correctly?
    4. welzebub, 2 years ago
I meant ZBS not ABS. :-)

None at all, mate. Even Mark Hill has it as a Zemek piece. It is his book that has laid the modern foundation for MCM Czech glass collecting, but some of us have been collecting this stuff for years. The Mstisov colours are quite distinct. You will see that on my next post. Zemek's work was continued not just with ZBS after his death. The famous 'Rhapsody' range too was taken up by Moser - the later pieces are much brighter. I have a really early piece of that range made at Mstisov: Erzeugnis Nr 52031. Its colours are much more subdued than the later pieces. There was a major retrospective of the factories of Mstisov a couple of years ago.

In fact he was one of the originals at ZBS in 1950. It seems that people thought he would have been the leader of ZBS but he refused because he wished to pursue his role as a designer. In 1956 he moved on and worked at Karlovarske sklo Moser and with the operational role of Teplicke sklo in Mstisov until his death in 1960.

Frantisek Zemek also designed pressed glass for Rudolfova hut, Hermanova hut, Libochovice and Rosice. During his education he worked as a designer for CMS / Ceskomoravske sklarny, after 1934 the successor to the S. Reich & Co., Krasno - Vienna company after it went bankrupt.

Interestingly, Mstisov had three important glass factories that go back to the late nineteenth century I think. It is a town due east of Hrob aka Klostergrab. About half an hour away by car at the most.

In my notes, I have a list of ZBS colours -- they come from a credible source, though for the life of me, I don't know who/what that source was. For interest, I'll add them here:

      10000 Crystal (uncoloured)
      10100 Luxodin (lilac/neodymium)
      10200 Royalit (pink)
      10300 Oceanit (dark green)
      10400 Virginit (brown)
      10500 Citrin (yellow)
      10600 Smaragd (light green)
      10900 Cobalt (dark blue)
      11900 (?) (light blue)
      19900 (?) (black)

I don't know what the missing colours (10700 and 10800 are).

      Anik :)

By the way ROYALIT is the colour you can see of the vase on the table in Pc. 4.

My two vases are both LUXODIN , one with SMARAGD trails the other LUXODIN. They are both neodymium glass and change to light blue in fluorescent light.

Thanks guys for the kind comments. ANIK .... I probably read that on GMB but unlike you did not make a note of it. Marcus and yourself have been part of that group on GMB that have made so many discoveries on this topic. We all have much to thank you for that work over the years.
