Hello, I have this old tool, which I think is a sharpener. At least the top bit. No idea what the notches in the handle are for.

The tool is French and belonged to our village barber, long retired, so that's why I am assuming sharpener.

Any knowledge or ideas are welcome

Hello Gillian and Phil (sorry time difference delay)

It measures 10 cm (4 inches) long by 2 cm (1 inch) wide

Thanks for the size info Piddlewick...that rules out my first guess (part of an old hotel room keyhole blocker thingie) handily?! I'm curious what parts of it might move, and in what fashion. Could you possibly add another pic or 3 (or just description?) to help us all see?? :-)

      Hi AnthingObscure

As far as I can tell it is complete, nothing broken, and no moving parts.
(trying to work out how to add more photos now...)

Looking at the tool I wouldn't think it was used to sharpen. I sooner think it would have been used on the old manual type clippers (before electric clippers). This appears to be able to set teeth of different dimension and the other end to set the alignment between the upper and lower cutters. The side wings I would assume could be used to straighten bent teeth and maintain proper space between the teeth.

I was given one very similar? Today. Looks like a multi tool. Glass cutter wheel on one end, knife sharpener on other end. Two steel angles seem right for scissor sharpening. And notches for breaking glass fragments. All guesses

Thanks Motoolz for the response. Agree about the multi tool aspect, and knife/scissor sharpener. Hadn't thought of notches for breaking glass. It's a consideration. I lean more towards the notches as saw teeth adjustment, but for barbershop clippers, but am also guessing. (This was found as part of an old barber shop collection of items.)
