I took on the task of restoring the cabinet of my 1919 Singer Model 66 "Red Eye" treadle sewing machine. Picture #3 shows the "new" top I found on eBay before restoration. I used linseed oil and #00 steel wool first, patched a couple of places where veneer was missing, then applied a coat of stain. I then painted the base with a satin black and outlined the Singer emblems in gold. I didn't want it to look new, so I kept the gold outlining to a minimum. There's just enough there to make it look age appropriate. The machine that goes with this cabinet is not only beautiful, but it sews a better stitch than most modern machines. I'm planning to have a lot of fun sewing with it this summer.
