It's about 8 inches long, made of bronze.

My first thought was a letter opener but it has an odd tip.

It is the face of the Renaissance poet Dante Alighieri.

Could be a page turner. In fact, I bet it is. Especially if the edges are not sharp. What it was is long ago, books were binded differently and many pages were not cut, so that's what this was for, cutting the pages to be able to read what was between the uncut paper. Turning the page and a quick swipe, continue reading. It didn't need to be sharp as the pages were creased. This is a very nice piece. I had a wooden one I gave as a gift and they love it.

shareurpassion, I agree to an extent but not about it being a page flipper. It would more than qualify as a page marker. If you google Victorian Bible Page Marker you should find them.

Interesting! I did think the bottom was a bit different, Seems kind of thick either way, especially for a bible.
