Two brooches I'd appreciate an ID on. Best guess of mine is a late 20th century attempt to recreate the look of 1930s/40s bakelite & metal jewelry. Whichever the case, I like them. Mixed material brooches such as these are charming in my book and it's extra nice to have a set.

I bought them together from a local thrift store for 50 eurocent. The plastic seems to be lucite, on the metal I have no clue. Curiously, the eye of the bird is coppery, while none of the other metal parts are anything but silvery. There are injection marks (best seen in the second pic as a yellow spot on the whale's tail and the bird's lower wing) but no mold seams. The lucite has indentations for the metal to fit in (this is accomplished better on the whale than the bird) and the attachment means is glue. Because the corners are rounded front-to-back, a bit of the metal sticks out over the edge, but not over the lucite base (best seen in the wing tip in the third pic). The clasps are different and it might be possible the whale's was repaired at some point. I have no clue why there are holes in the bird's wings.

I didn't occur to me that the bird was a seagull and/or that there was a marine theme to these two and now I feel silly. Thanks for pointing it out! And also thanks for all the kind comments.
