I have been interested in Michael Andersen & Son, Bornholm, Denmark pottery since I bought a vase designed by Marianne Starck. The owl that I call Hedwig is glazed with Persia crackle glaze: a very complicated and hard to control technique, introduced to the company in the early 1930's by Daniel Andersen.
It is in excellent condition and signed with the triangle logo of Michael Andersen & Son. It is also signed with the monogram signature of Marianne Starck "MS".
They were copying the Chinese and Japanese glaze techniques, I think. The Chinese did craquelure during the Sung period in the fourteenth century. They call it Southern Ko ware. It is one of four classic wares of the period: Ju, Ting Kuan & Ko. The French loved this stuff and admired the unusual, ancient looking surface. They called it 'porcelaine truitée' or 'porcelaine craquelée'. Both were imitating fish scales; the 'trout lines' were much finer and the 'crackle' were larger and coarser.
The coarser craquelure glazes became a real thing again after Daniel Andersen won the gold medal at the The Brussels International Exposition of 1935 (Exposition Universelle et Internationale Bruxelles) that was held in Heysel Park, Brussels, Belgium from April 27 through November 6, 1935.
Mind you there were also the very fine craquelures of Thorkild Olsen for Royal Copenhagen in the thirties and later on very Chinese shapes and imitating 'porcelaine truitée'.
What I like though is how Daniel Andersen used it on figures. This owl is different to the other pieces like the vase I have on CW. She uses the craquelure as a base on some very touchy-feely pieces and then drew modernist figures on them with some bright flashes of colour. rebarhicks posted an Erik Ploen piece yesterday with a Norwegian version of the modernist figures on a very different glaze:
