Purchased this beauty in a local antique shop, where the photo was taken. It will be a great storage piece for towels; wash rags etc.
From the internet:
A pie safe, also called a pie chest, pie cupboard, kitchen safe, and meat safe, is a piece of furniture designed to store pies and other food items. This was a normal household item before iceboxes came into regular use, and it was an important part of the American household starting in the 1700s and continuing through the 1800s.
The pie safe was used to store not only pies, but bread, meat, and other perishables as well, to protect them from insects and vermin.
Nice primitive! I just sold one of these, mine had the drawer on the top and it was unfinished poplar wood.

Thank you! I know it is just a picture but do you have any idea what kind of wood this may be? Also assuming the glass knobs were a later addition(?)
Hard to tell, looks like walnut but the drawer face looks like poplar with walnut stain but I`m guessing for the most part. I would say the drawer probably had matching wood knobs originally.
That's a really beautiful pie safe. I love that design punched into the tin panels.
jscott,
Thank you! I have been trying to find that pattern on other pie safes but no luck.
