12 years after Smith & Wesson discontinued manufacturing handcuffs for the Peerless Handcuff Co., Smith & Wesson introduced their own line of handcuffs in 1952. They were advertised as "A New and Improved Model" by Smith & Wesson.
This set that I acquired, came out of the factory, and was used to determine the amount of stress a pair could go through before failing.
Until you surpass that breaking point, one can't determine the maximum amount of stress one can endure.
This example definitely surpassed that breaking point.
    The 1953 product brochure states:
    THE PROOF !
Over 700 Lbs. Supported On A Single Tooth Of Each Cuff !
    STRENGTH AND RIGIDITY
THAT EXCEEDS THE MOST EXACTING SPECIFICATIONS
I'm not sure what kind of method of testing they actually performed, but this one must have exceeded the 700 Lbs.

Did not know Smith & Wesson made cuffs, sounds like these would be a challenge for Houdini

Newfld: Smith & Wesson began manufacturing handcuffs for the Peerless Handcuff Co. in 1914 & continued doing so until Nov. 15, 1940. In 1952 they began manufacturing their own line of handcuffs at their gun manufacturing plant in Springfield, Mass. In 1979 they moved their handcuff manufacturing to their plant in Houlton, Maine, where they still manufacture them, and are one of the leading handcuff manufactures in existence. Dave.

So I need to explain my husband is a policeman but that could also me missunderstood ha ha :) :) should probably not have written anything at all as it does not help you with any new knowledge. Just wanted to say I enjoy CW and your post.

Elisabethan, yes I collect handcuffs that Smith & Wesson manufactured & designed for the Peerless Handcuff Company and all the handcuffs Smith & Wesson manufactured under their name & logo.
Here is a link to part of my collection I displayed in 2013. It has grown substantially since then.
