This was something that I didn't expect to find at the Flea Market today 10/12/2019, or anyday! :^D They're from a Museum Storage, and apparently Retired from Display in Apr. 1914. The Seller said that they came from the Estate of a Wealthy Man, as did many of the other things that He had to Sell Today. The Woven Bast Shoes, are from Russia and other surrounding Countries, and have been made, and worn for Thousands of years, some People still use them, or similar ones Today. These are 12" x 4 1/2", about a size 10 mens Shoes, and worn with a Stocking, or Legging, and tied up the Ankle with Cord/Rope. Bast is the fiber between the Bark, and the Wood of some Trees, and is removed and cut into strips while it's still pliable, and woven into the simple Shoe Cup, and the Cord, or Leather/Skin Lasing, holds the Shoe Cup together, and to the Foot and Ankle.
This is what's written on the paper sticker on the bottom of one Shoe: **A guess on the Donor!

So these Bast Shoes were Retired in 1914, and put in Storage, from what now is known as "De Young Memorial Museum San Francisco", and sometime between then and now were acquired by the Wealthy Man, and then Sold from his Estate, and then to me! :^D

Here's more information about these Antique Bast Shoes:
Lapti, basketry shoes made from bark or bast (inner bark of linden tree), were the most popular footwear in Rus. Firstly lapti are mentioned in the 10th century documents, although an instrument that was used for making lapti, was found in the ancient encampments dated to the Iron Age (around 1000 BC). As lapti were made from thin bast, they were abraded very quickly: in four days in summer, in ten days in winter. This footwear was usual for poor people.

Maybe Stuff, but they remind me more of the old Huarache Sandal less the old rubber tire tread sole! :^D Those lasted a little longer though, sometimes all Summer! :^)
