Found these in a an old tin. They appear to be wax with a wick very similar to a mini candle. I've been told they're a form of an early match but would like confirmation.

I doubt they are matches but may have been used to light other candles. I would say these are home made tallow and bees wax candles. I know both the Shakers and Amish made them like this back in the 1800's and early 1900's.

Thanks fhrjr2 looks like you're spot on. Neil

Many long years ago we made these at home. That was when tallow and lard were both free at the butcher shop. We lit other candles with them and also kerosene finger lamps.

      Brilliant information thank you.

Similar (albeit longer, usually 6-10"?) are still available and commonly used as 'inserts' in those candle-lighter/snuffer wand thingies often spotted being carried by somebody near the beginning or end of assorted church services/weddings/etc...

Just a probably generally useless point of trivia...?? ;-) :-)
