Recent love birds brooch from ebay - 3.5"x 2.5". - sold as bakelite on wood.... Beautiful, but isn't right. I couldn't tell until I got it today. I hope it's from the 70's at least. Sometimes bakelite or catalin or galalith was laminated to wood - which I love and have examples of. What is wrong or suspect about this?
    * Eyes are just blobs of glass, not intricate cabochon beads as in 30's designs.
    * Hardware here is embedded , not glued on, that's good - but it isn't 30's-40's hardware.
    * Doesn't pass yellow q-tip simichrome why? because this red plastic isn't old enough to oxidize yet.
    * Copy of 1930's love birds - nice, but not as intricate as the original. It's not in bakelite research books that I can find.

And....why keep it? Nice quality design, lovely color, it's still so much nicer than current costume plastic :-)

Oh Mary, nothing is as disappointing than to open your item you’ve been waiting for only to find out the seller was not honest, or didn’t know better. I bought a stunning green and ice D&E and the first time I wore it it broke in half, leaving half on my sweater and the other half in my hand! And I cried.
Your lovebirds are precious, but being the Bakelite collector you are, I know you feel they’re not up to par.
Either way you decide, know we are here for you dear! :)

Gorgeous red lovebirds, even if copies Mary they are a wonderful pair and look terrific on your jacket

They are wonderful in their own right Mary, but as the bakelite queen, also disappointing for you.

      So many nice comments!

Eileen - I was bummed at first, mainly because I didn't ask enough questions - I should have known it wasn't right. But, I didn't spend TOO much (ha ha, I overspent). It will be special in 10 years...

Ken - I contacted the seller right away, they said to send it back at my cost. It wasn't that expensive, so I didn't push for a partial refund. But, this just irks me!

Jenni - They are well made and beautiful red color. Thanks for seeing the bright side :-)

      renedijkstra - yes, you'r e right, cute.

racer4four - haven't heard from you in a long time, thanks for commenting. That's the problem with buying online - take a gamble. I was too excited and should have questioned and compared to other similar love fault. ha ha! Oh well!

Beautiful. I think I am going to wear my brooches on my denim jacket too to spice it up. They look like love birds. Valentine's

Maybe its a composition material, It reminds me of the lovebirds on the blue mirrors of the 50's. Whatever they are, lovebirds are very hot again and a really charming treasure, nonetheless !~

Jewelryantiquelover - or on a sweater, or vintage shopping purse. Fun to tag.

Phil - not sure about composite from 50's mirrors. I've seen those. I hope my brooch is lucite from the 70's but I have a feeling this pin is a copy from China and probably pretty new. I haven't found another like mine for awhile online so that might be the saving grace that it is vintage. We'll see, other items usually come up for sale online after posts on CW.
