I picked this piece up for a pittance. Did I pick it up because I thought it was Sherman?
I picked it up because of it’s condition...PRISTINE!
Look at the rhodium plating. It’s perfect, not a scratch. The stones sparkle like diamonds in the correct lighting. They are definitely Swarovski. There are 16 prongs on each navette & 8 prongs around the middle chaton. I do believe Sherman made more than one starfish, close in detail. So it has all the beautiful qualities that makes up a Sherman piece, just no hallmark. Oh, one last clue, this piece did come from Canada.
Is it Sherman? You tell me.

Can’t tell you who made it, but you did very well :). Congrats!

Woah Ken, I never caught that! There’s no way Sherman needed anyone to make his jewelry. This is a mystery!!! This needs looking into!!!

Jewelry can be so puzzling sometime, especially when beautiful pieces are not marked!

It does not resemble the one on etsy at all. Ridiculous. And I am sure Gustave never had any intention of duplicating D&E at any time. The one on Etsy has smaller stones I see, quite small. However, the quality of the rhodium plating appears top notch as Sherman always was. And apart from the lopsided stone on the ends, it would be a standard Star as Sherman always made. I too would consider it strongly as a Sherman piece. Also the fact that each of the stars has many claws is something Sherman would do, and often did !! Also the central stone in the middle has many claws instead of the standard 4 claws, The brooch is screaming quality and it is spectacular !!! Hopefully one will be found that is signed.

      Yes Ken,
D & E did make a starfish brooch. It was part of their Sealife Collection. It was made with several different sizes of chatons.
Very HTF, unlike the Sherman starfish, which is everywhere..

      Woah Phil..
Let’s be nice. Ridiculous is a strong word. No one said Sherman duplicated D & E.
Also, my brooch is very small, I zoomed in to show detail.
Remember, let’s all play nice :)

So beautiful! What are the original dimensions? I know I'm bossy about that, but it does help right away sometimes when we post size. XOXO Eileen!

Yes I guess I used a rather strong word there. I meant that about the one on etsy not what you were thinking.

      That’s ok my friend,
and it’s ok to be passionate about our jewelry. And I believe you are correct, but it’s close. Frankly, I would never buy a piece of Sherman without the hallmark. This was not sold as a Sherman, hence the cheap price...

And you are also right Mary, we should give dimensions!
This is a very small piece, just barely 2”x 2”

Thank you Foseatme, but please remember,
      Let’s ALL play nice! :)

Quite the find. I’m going to say, I think you have a Sherman here, Eileen. I have the same brooch and matched earrings in pink — exactly the same back, heavy pronging around the larger stones, end stones, 2”, etc. Don’t see a single difference. Lots of unsigned Sherman.Pink set is signed: both earrings and brooch.

Hopefully Daisy can post her example and a match can be made !~

      Thank you Leanne!
I didn’t think I was seeing things, Ha!
Thank you so much for your confirmation.
This helps others knowing Sherman didn’t sign every piece, ( in a set most likely)
The jewelry I mainly collect never signed a single piece!
D & E used hang-tags. So I have learned how to spot a piece through construction and other traits.
Again, thanks a bunch and yes, let’s see the beautiful pink starfish set!

Very nice brooch and the first thing in my mind was a starfish :)
    17. Elisabethan Elisabethan, 11 months ago
If mermaids wore jewelry this would be it :) Lovely and sparkling starfish, like bubbles.

      Thank you, Elizabeth!
My starfish is quite pretty, and your comment is most appreciated, but take a look at Leanne’s starfishes! ( Daisy1000) Sherman made these in many colors and variations. (Someday I hope to find the D & E starfish. That would be a feat! )
