I bought this W. J. Loth #28D Blast Stove at an auction in October, 2019. It had some surface rust all over, but nothing that had eaten through. My husband spent two days using a mild rust remover and wet sandpaper to remove the rust and then we sprayed it with a matte black high-heat spray paint and did the accents in a high-heat silver. I grew up in Waynesboro, Va where these stoves were made and I’m always on the lookout for good pieces.

Too late now, but there’s a paste-type product called “stove black” that is made for cast iron stoves. It goes on like paste wax and buffs to a low sheen.

We were going to get stove black, but we figured the 3000 degree heat-resistant paint would work and I doubt we’ll ever use it as a stove again. Although I do use my Loth cast iron pans, I have some pieces that are just for show.
