Trunk, believe it is Civil War Era. I don't know much about trunks. Looks to be handmade. Purpose? Not a steamer or ship trunk...doesnt lock. Storage? Haven't determined wood. Wood type?

I would say early Immigrant trunk, all hand made dove tail and wood peg construction, hand wrought iron work, I would say predates civil war, early 1800's give or take a bit.
Yes! Thank you. I was looking for this confirmation, but I didn’t want to “give” it up so to speak. I agree. I think this is late 1700s, in all honesty and from my experience. It came from the south, from a family who went THROUGh the Civil War. The patina on the wood, the handmade work, this wasn’t a wealthy mans piece, but rather a travel worn case that might have crossed the ocean. I would guess Spain. I get that feeling. And the Spanish occupied much of the South during this time. We don’t have stylistic cues such as ball and claw Louis feet to pull the bell, but the original dovetailing, the pegging, the hammered iron, all look like early work. The patina is very smooth and worn. This baby has been touched by time. Time alone gave it the smooth rubbed down shine that covers scars and carry scratches with an almost milky look.
I can't disagree with you, I have one similar that I date 1780 to 1820, so very nice find.
