John B. Appleby volunteered in 1861 into Battery A, of the First Battalion, Maryland Light Artillery. (Union)
He was from Baltimore.
He fought in the Penninsula campaign, and Chancellorsville, and Antietam, plus more. After serving a full three year
term, he re-enlisted into Battery B of the same unit for the remainder of the war. This paper has "1883" printed at the bottom.
Also one section that was perhaps attached at the bottom, dedicates this memorial, in 1912, to John in the name of his wife Catharine,
and their five children. This was after his death, which I am told was 1909.
