I love amber and Bakelite. From far, I thought that this necklace could be either. When I got close and picked it up,I was rather disappointed because it was too heavy for both of these materials. Upon closer inspection, I realized that the beads were actually glass beads. The only unusual thing about this necklace is that the beads are rather irregular. So my question is, are the beads of poor quality or could they be older?

    Thanks for looking:)

Eileen, you are correct, the clasp could tell you everything or nothing. That makes it very frustrating. I have restrung a number of bead necklaces and have tried to find matching clasps from the time period as much as possible. The clasp on this necklace looks vintage to me (but this kind of brass clasp has been around for a long time) and so do the beads -but I have been wrong before :(

Also, I assumed that the beads are glass but they could be stone. That would explain the irregularity. But a yellow stone? None comes to mind right now.

They look older to me, I think they're handmade glass and not stone. I've had a few strands similar to this myself, in different colours. These have obviously been restrung as you can see with the nasty nylon, but heavy glass beads aren't often on their original stringing substrate unless they were originally on wire or chain. I love them!

Thanks so much for your comments, Mary and pebble. I had another close look at the beads with my magnifying glass and think now that the beads are glass after all. I don't remember where I found the necklace because I bought it some time ago but most of my items are from church bazaars, second hand stores, and antique malls, therefore I am reasonably certain that it has some age. As for the length, it is not very long but longer than a choker necklace.
Pebble, I agree with you about the beads being restrung on nasty nylon. I wanted to restring the necklace but I was too lazy so far.
