This is a vintage Lucite (not Bakelite) necklace found at my local thrift. The colors are very Art Deco and the clasp is older style, too, but the condition is so new looking I'm thinking this is a reproduction. I know there are plastic aficionados here, so please chime in. Your thoughts?
Beautiful necklace Maureen, the green is a lovely shade and that deco front piece is fab! Very nice find
The hidden clasp is a sign of a high end maker? The colors are superb together. Very Deco! Maybe this was the one that was put away in a drawer for decades, hence the lovely pristine condition? I just bought another Kramer set that was made in the 50’s, and it looks like it was made yesterday..anyhoo, here’s hoping Mary can shed some light.
Either way, I’m with Ken. I love it too!
Sorry, not sure if it's repro or 60's or older. What kind of string is used? Beautiful necklace and great pictures.
Mary I added another picture. It is a close-up of the green thread/cord it is strung with. I can't tell what it is, silk or cotton as the beads are tight. Hope the picture helps. Thanks for the love and appreciative comment.
Ken, Jenni and Eileen, thanks for the comments and loves.
And to Hel1,Ben, fortapache, and vynil33rpm thanks for love!
This necklace is listed on ebay right now. Seller seems to be pretty sure it's bakelite.
Really? It didn't test as Bakelite with metal polish. Thanks for the heads up. I'll go look for it. I'm not an expert on Bakelite.
Just noticed there are 3 on ebay today. Everyone looks at CW posts and jumps to their desired conclusion of what the item is. Sadly, mostly not as dedicated to research as we are.
Hi Valentino97, Yes I saw there were 3 on eBay. That's why I think this is a reproduction. There are too many. Also, I think it is Lucite and I'm sticking with it. Lucite was created by DuPont in 1937 so it is an old material but I get suspicious when I see a bunch on eBay. I immediately think modern reproduction.
Either way, it’s absolutely fabulous!!! I adore that shade of green. What a wonderful piece ????
Oh I agree about loving Lucite, also celluloid - not just bakelite for me. I love the old plastics. And, still some great designer pieces made today but we tend to be overwhelmed by the mass of cheap, scratched up plastic we see every day. Hard to find the special items. I'm proud of the plastic fantastics I post. Love yours too :-)
Ken, Jenni, Valentino97 and GlamorouslyRefinedFun thanks for your comments and Loves. And thanks to the other 13 collectors who also loved this piece. Many thanks!
$19.99 0n ebay! Also listed on Ruby lane. Makes you wonder why this necklace is all over the place.
