General Stone directed the Union troops to cross the Potomac River
from Maryland towards Leesburg, Virginia in 1861.
Ball's Bluff was a disaster, and many blamed General Stone for the defeat.
He was imprisoned for some time during the emergency of the Civil War,
but today is not thought responsible for the defeat.
