Well, even though I collect glass, ceramics can sometimes turn my head.
I've always admired Clarice Cliff pottery, & swore that if I ever saw a piece in an op shop, I'd go for it...& so after many years, I finally struck it lucky.
This large decorative wall plate with a relief moulded design had only just hit the shelves when I spotted it & snapped it up.
It measures 34 cm wide, & is an example of the "My Garden" range, produced between 1934 - 1939. The raised design is of a basket of flowers, in the autumnal colourway (there is also a pastel version). I especially enjoy the yellow hollyhock at the back of the posy, as I've just grown hollyhocks for the first time & adore them!
Flower baskets were a very popular 1930s motif, & turn up on a lot of ceramics & other items of the era. For instance, I also have an Art Deco tray, made from black glass with a reverse painted foil picture of a very similar basket of flowers - in that case, violets. The motif also is often seen embroidered on linen doileys from the same period. I think it was perhaps a stylised, nostalgic nod to Victoriana, along with the "crinoline lady" motifs that also became popular in the 1930s.
Marked on the back - Clarice Cliff Wilkinsons England.
(I have one other piece of genuine Clarice Cliff pottery, a rectangular plate from the Biarritz range. That was given to me many years ago by my late grandmother.)
