Like many other festive days, Valentine's Day has it's stereotypical aspects. We're all different, & so why not approach it in a different way to suit ourselves?
    1. I unearthed this stone heart in the garden of my former home some years ago now. It came with me to my new home because it is special & strange. It lives on the mantelpiece now with other special things. And just like the Tin Man (for some reason I always related to the Tin Man) I found my heart at last.
    2. I don't know about you, but red roses are kind of...ho hum. Here instead is a black calla lily that has been in bloom for over a month, through extreme heat & wild storms. And it is shaped like a heart! This variety is called "Black Star"....just like David Bowie's final record.
    3. On the same theme, a black hollyhock, called "The Watchman". I first saw this growing in the Botanic Gardens in Hobart, Tasmania in 2006, & I thought...I'd love to grow one of those someday. Well, dreams can come true, & here it is, black as midnight & like living velvet.
Happy days to you all, whoever you are & whoever & whatever you love...

A very special heart rock, indeed!
I love the black hollyhock and your description of it, “black as midnight and like living velvet”....if I had never seen a black hollyhock blossom, I would be able to envision one just by those words.

Love that stone! It's a perfect heart for sure, love the reference to the Tin Man, made me chuckle. (Chuckle?! That's one weird word)!!! The black calla lily absolutely does look like a heart! And David Bowie... :( gone too soon. Never heard of the third one but looks good!

Thanks so much, Patricia, & I'm pleased to think that I was able to paint a picture with words for you!

Thanks also keramikos - yes, the Tin Man struck a chord with me, something melacholic & comical all at once. I could very well imagine that metallic paint would be hazardous to one's health, too...all kinds of toxic things in it...especially back in those days! Great video BTW!

Thanks also, sharurpassion, & agree with all you said! As to the black hollyhock, there are some other varieties but this seems to be the best one (& the one that was in stock at my local plant nursery).

Many thanks, Bill, & I'm glad to have brought a little dark light to your day!
Us Goths are really quite gentle folks despite all the black...

      Thanks so much, Pascale!
Yes, to me there's something magical about black flowers, it's an unexpected, mysterious colour. I'm also glad that you appreciate the rock, it was a wonderful find. I'd been gardening for hours, tidying up an old flower bed, when I unearthed it. It must have come from somewhere else as it was completely unlike any other rocks in the whole garden. And at the same time, I also found a single gold earring & a coin.

I agree, Pascale - it was a magical end to a day of rather hard work in my old garden. I was feeling weary & dour, but those finds lifted me up & away from all that...

Thank you most kindly, kivatinitz, much appreciated & glad that you're enjoying these vases. Hope to find more some day...
