Hot off the bench! Here is a one-off Allyn P-51B MUSTANG Ashtray Model. Allyn considered this conceptually when they approached North American Aviation to produce an ashtray model of the P-51. By they time negotiations had progressed into a contract, the earlier razorback version was eclipsed by the later iconic P-51D with the bubble canopy. In many respects, the razorbacks had some better performance than the later versions. The were more stable in the roll axis and slightly faster in cruise.
We had acquired a heavily damaged Allyn P-51D and we chose to finish the model as the early B/C version which took on the Luftwaffe experts in 1943. That unsung winner needs recognition. The model received a new razorback dorsal section along with a new hand-carved canopy from original WW2 Rohm & Haas Plexiglas. Model has been finished as a 4th Fighter Group steed from late 1943 when they introduced the Mustang into operations in Europe.
Thanks for looking and Loving!
