i am in the demolition business...torn additions off of a civil war era log house when i went in the attic i found this and a old crosscut saw..just wondered what this item is....thanks chris

    A protective collar for dogs used during bear and other big game hunting...

    It's a calf weaner. The round part would slip over the calves nose and the strap around the neck. The cows would get a poke when the calves tried to suckle, and would kick them off. Here's some pic's of other weaners or blabs. Hundreds were patented.

    I would say this one is 30s-50s. Here's a patent of one from the 1800's Funny drawing, but it gives how they were used.

    Apparently these were used to protect farm animals from coyote attacks. I have also seen something much like this used to ween calfs off of the mothers milk.
