This basket was made by Mavis Doering, of the Cherokee Nation. She was born in 1929 and was mostly self taught in basket making. She used Honeysuckle, Buck Rush, oak and ash splints and cat tail leaves in her baskets. Her baskets have been in museums all over. This basket is double walled and made of Buck Rush with natural dyes of red and yellow. Mavis Doering was very well known for her baskets and although she did put dates along with her signatures on the bottom, this one does not have a date. I got this basket for $8.00, these baskets are going for $300.00 and up, in the same condition as this one. A good find I think and a great addition to my private collection.
