This was one of those magic finds...a true sleeper. Trawling through glass on eBay AU last Friday, I recognised this basket as an example of Peloton glass, even though it was not described as such, & the main photo showed a view from above, in which very little of the coloured threading could be seen. Needless to say I snapped it up with immense enthusiasm!
The basket is made from two layers of cased glass, clear over opaque white, with applied Peloton threads in pastel colours - pale blue, pink, & a slightly greenish yellow. The white lining of the sections of cane can be clearly seen, & the threads are blended into the surface of the basket, not raised & textured as in some types of Peloton glass.
It measures a petite 11.5 cm tall to the top of the clear applied handle, 9 cm x 8 cm across the four - cornered, rolled - in top rim, & 5 cm across the base, which has a rough, snapped pontil mark.
The handle has two pincerwork leaf - like projections on either side.
Peloton glass was made by a number of manufacturers in Bohemia & England from the 1880s onwards. Most examples are difficult to pin down in terms of a maker, & there is much variation in the basic decor of short, applied cane sections.
All I can say is that I'm thrilled to have been able to make it mine, & that it is utterly charming. Oh, & it's a basket! :-)

A really unusual peloton, but in colours similar to to another peloton piece you have. Unusual basket shape too. A wonderful find!

Much appreciated, Peggy - & yes, I thought it was an interesting shape as well. Having so many baskets puts us into a good position for judging rarities! :-)
And I am thinking of doing some group shots of the various Peloton types I have, for the sake of comparison. It may help with possible identifications in the future, by looking at commonalities in shapes, decors, etc.

I think seeing your peloton pieces grouped by type of peloton would be very interesting. However with only four images per post you may need more than one post! No hardship there though :)

      Good hunting there IL!
You have to love finding a good piece that few would recognise. I have been led by you to peloton glass and really love it. This is so pretty with the threads coming up from the base in those delicate pastels.
      Post on!

Peggy, I'm working on a strategic plan already. Looking through all the Peloton & checking for similarities in thread colours, ribbed/smooth forms, crimps, shapes, & types of item. Could take a while as there are numerous overlaps in the categories! :-)

Many thanks, Karen, & so pleased to have awoken you to the delights of Peloton! It was a thrill to find this piece last week, that's for sure. I've not unearthed many specimens within Australia so that was an extra bonus, too.
I'm amazed that I've found as many pieces as I have over the years...my first one was in 1996, & I didn't know what kind of glass it was at the time, just that I liked it.
Top of my ultimate wish list would be a Peloton fairy lamp (even just an orphan dome without a base would be perfectly satisfying). Dreams can come true, so I'll keep on searching... :-)
