Glyniss, this is called a jewelry casket. Many are silver plated, some are sterling silver. What do you mean by restore it??? You mean shine it? Get a jewelers cloth and rub it or just a soft cloth. Look to see if there is any numbers or letters or even marks on there saying where it was made.

Hi all thanks for the comments I bought the box from a second hand dealer cheap. The bottom of the box is missing and was replaced with a loose piece of press wood. I have also not found any other stamps or markings on the pieces I have. I'm thinking that it could have been on the base plate. The hinges are also off and the lid is loose. Also there is no lining inside the box don't know if this was how it was originally. I would just like to restore it to near as possible originality. It's a gorgeous box and deserves to be pretty again. Thank you

Maybe you could find a local maker of wooden boxes and ask them to create a custom jewellery box for you with this beautiful piece as the lid (and the side pieces as trim) - thus getting the best of the old and the new? I think it would be worth the trouble!

But if it's not worth repairing, as you said, then it's not even usable...? I guess it depends whether you view it as a vintage piece to be left as intact as possible.
