This cute little dude was in reality once a "shopping cart number plate" back in the days when stores actually bothered to use such things on their carts. I got it ~30yrs ago when that particular cart 'got away' from whatever drugstore (I think) actually owned it and ended up in the alley behind the apt building I lived in and where I otherwise parked my car...didn't take but a quick extra moment and a handy screwdriver that otherwise was in the backseat to make it mine instead... ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-)
It *is* a little thing, measuring only 6" long and 2-3/8" tall, made of reasonably heavy gauge embossed steel. No info on it to suggest who really made in the 1st place.
I spent many a Saturday bagging groceries at the supermarket. After they were bagged the cashier asked what the buggy number was and the bag boy would tell them and they would right it on the customers reciept. The buggy would go to the sidewalk and the customer would drive up and give the person running pickup the buggy number. Groceries got put in the car and hopefully a tip and you moved on to the next. Your post brought back some good memories:)

(and its also high time this little sign, just now, actually got *its own* new little spot tacked up on one of my walls here in the house instead of laying in a box -- that makes me smile too...)

Cokemam1959, I remember going grocery shopping with my mom- all 5 kids tagging along-at Piggly Wiggly. They had that same numbering system and pickup at the curb.
Sometimes the line would be several cars long and Mother would worry about the ice cream melting....thanks for the memories, you guys!
Watchsearcher.....Piggy Wiggly? My grandfather worked at Piggy Wiggly and we bought groceries there all the time. This is a Barbara Streisand moment:)
