Gold Badge Medal/Badge engraved on reverse "Presented to Captain N.A. Briggs Jan 1891" Anyone have a idea what organization this might be from. Most likely from Rhode Island with the motto "What Cheer" I'm thinking navy because of the anchors but that could also be because of the Rhode Island Connection. Masonic? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Looking at the condition and the fact that there is no gold content mark I would assume this was/is a commemorative pin quite possibly made in 1991 for a celebration.

Lot of elaborate work, if one of a kind.

A lot of jeweler made gold pieces are unmarked. I would guess early 1900's. Presented to a ship captain. The broach and hanger is missing but a very impressive piece.

There is a 1892 newspaper write up which includes Captain Nathan A. Briggs from Providence, R.I.

Brooklyn Daily Eagle, January 21, 1892 is the paper. Sadly I can't pull it up.

This is the bottom of a badge sold at auction in December 2019. Here is the link: https://www.invaluable.com/auction-lot/impressive-ab-of-sp-14k-gold-1891-presentatio-1573-c-9c24f4fb30#

You'll see that it has the exact same engraving on the back. How did you come upon this? I wonder how it was broken??
