The form of this vase has always pleased me, but it is the duck-egg glaze that has made it one of my favorites. A market find I've had it for nearly thirty years. Bretby Art Pottery, more properly known as Tooth & Co. Ltd., was started in 1883 by Henry Tooth and William Ault. The mark on the vase is a rising sun over the name BRETBY and Made in England.

Bretby is way underestimated IMHO ( also in the opinion of one of the Antiques shows experts ; Tim Wonnacott I seem to remember... ) especially their early 20th century production

This piece is supreme. The glaze is perfect for the form, and the glaze is a marvel all by itself. I have to pay attention to Bretby now.

The color and egg-shell glaze, the shape,....the piece is stunning!
It looks like it could have been found in a nest.

      Hi V,
I thought I'd seen Bretby on here somewhere...turned out its yours :)
I agree with you & others, the glaze on this is gorgeous.
I see yours just says 'Bretby', with no 'England', does that mean this dates to pre 1891?
I was reading they used mould patterns a lot, with some exceptions, do you know how to tell the difference?

Hi FRAN. I think this one has the made in England mark at the top of the middle photo. Have you seen this site?

Yes V, that was one of the sites i visited:) Lots of useful info.
I couldn't make out what it said on the side.
Do you know if this, or the one i have, is moulded or thrown?
I didn't even know you got moulded pottery, lol, i know glass can be moulded and am learning how to tell the difference, but pottery i know even less.

Check out 'slip casting'. Most of the figurines you see are slip cast. Everything industrial uses the process. This one of mine too. I'd say yours as well. If a pot is thrown by hand you will see circular lines inside the piece caused by finger pressure. Outside the pot is finished off smooth in most cases.

      Thanks V,
I was reading about slip casting, and how it was sometimes done twice to the same pot. It looks like yours and mine have been glazed twice.
I can't see inside mine at all, the openings too small, so i can't look for finger marks:(
Another thing you maybe able to help me with, On my pot, do you know how the part holding the bulb would have been fixed on? There's no wear or scratches on the top at all
