Town Farm's were also called Poor Farms. It was a type of welfare system. The poor folks lived at the farm free. The men worked the fields and barns, took care of animals etc. The women cooked, cleaned, took care of invalids and tended the gardens. The one in the picture is now a bed and breakfast last I knew. A bit of trivia.

Great reminder how these situation could be handled with common sense, better than debtor's prison, or the poor house, with nothing to do and nothing to eat or barely. Thanks for posting.
truthordare no they weren't. in fact many were married with children. There were out buildings like little cabins where families usually lived. The main house had a big kitchen and dining area and sitting room and multiple bedrooms. No need to keep men and women apart as it wasn't at all a prison or jail type place. It was simply a place where you could get help and get back on your feet so to speak.
Or in fact "slavery" truthordare, which was probably the more common alternative down here during those days. :-( :-( :-(

ya we had a poor house/farm in the city I was born in, a lot of people spoke unkindly about it,..who never needed it ,...but come winter the poor and ex vets .. and mental challenge after living in the streets and alleys for the summer they were happy to be put into the farm for the winter,.. warn with a cot and 3 hots ......health care as needed...its still going today ...
