    TallCakes
    (114 items)

    This post is to show the detail of various 'Three Face' pedestals from cake stands. This first image is from a 10 1/2" Duncan cake stand. The other 3 images are side-by-side comparisons with 9 1/2" Imperial MMA and original George Duncan Glass stands. The GDG original is slightly more substantial than the MMA reproduction, but that is a bit hard to see in photographs. The detailing in the face of George Duncan and Son's (GDG) has more refined details compared to the MMA reproduction by Imperial Glass; notice differences in the overall shape of the face, as well as jaw line, nose and mouth. The profile images also show the differences in the nose and chin. Also notice braids between the faces on the side views. The frosted finish of the original GDG pieces fade due to the fuming process used whereas the MMA reproduction pieces have more of a defined line from an immersion process. Another useful test is the 'black-light test'; the original GDG pieces will have a soft yellow glow that is not present in reproduction pieces. Another detail is that the plate of the GDG original has a shallow scalloped skirt, whereas the scallops in the MMA reproductions are incorporated into the gallery and there is no skirt.

    The 9 1/2" cake stand was reproduced and has a smaller stem than the 10 1/2" stem shown in the first image.

      thanks! The b'day cake plate actually has 72 indentions/holes around the edge for placing candles around the cake; I have one of them. It is made by Imperial aslo; the same company that made the MMA 3-Face here.

      Great pics of the Three Face stems, TC. They are not the easiest to photograph, believe me, I know. I wrote an article for the Early American Pattern Glass Society that was published in their Newsletter in the spring that gives some guidelines to tell the repro Three Face pieces from the old.

      @thriftfan: thanks for the love

      @Paul71: Thank you. Is there anyway to get a copy of your article; is it online? I did this to help an eBayer who has an unmarked IG piece.

      I think the only way to get it is through the EAPGS

      There was no toothpick made in the original issue of "Three Face." All toothpicks are reproductions.

      many thanks epson223. Here's a direct link to more pics on these cake stands. The satin finish is very hard to photograph, so I still need to work on that, but the differences of originals and reproductions are evident.
