From mom’s estate unknown year this was made three American beauties the flag rose and the lady any ideas in dating this pattern would be greatly appreciate it

I had an item quite similar but it was a ladies hankie. Mu dad bought it for my mom during the beginning of WWII.
How about this:
July 4,1908
The 46 Star Flag: On July 4,1908, the U.S. flag grew to 46 stars with the addition to the Union of Oklahoma (November 16, 1907). Theodore Roosevelt (1901-1909) and William H. Taft (1909-1913) served as President under the 46 star flag. This was the official flag for 4 years.

I’ve counted stars till I’m cross-eyed but still keep coming up with 39....please, someone else count them and tell us your tally!
I’ve come up with some interesting info regarding the rose, the lady and the flag....info on all 3 have 1889 in common.
It’s a bit late for me to blab all my info so I’ll let it simmer in my head till tomorrow.
And regarding the stitches- I see all embroidery here- nothing crocheted.
It’s a beautiful piece of work.
I advise you not to wash it - speaking from personal experience, I tried gently washing a piece of vintage embroidery and some of the embroidery floss disintegrated before my eyes....

Thanks Patricia, I was counting as if the flag was unfurled, and 4 rows of 7 stars and 3 rows of 6 stars, so just guessing. :^D I don't know how the Flag on this Pillow Cover was designed, maybe just filled the Blue! I might be over thinking it! :^)

Bill, I see what you mean about the rows - some stars may be folded over and out of sight.
My big theory is based on only the visible stars....more tomorrow.....(yawn....it’s late).
I found some similar pieces on Worthpoint and Etsy...they date theirs everywhere from “late 1800s -early 1900s)...One had a definite date of 1909.
I certainly wish ladies would embroider the date and their names as a finishing touch on their lovely work! Wouldn’t that make it easier years later?
The American Beauty rose (also identified as “Madam Ferdinand Jamin rose”) was introduced in US in 1886 and quickly gained popularity even at the cost of $2 per stem.
It’s popularity led to it being called “The Million Dollar Rose”.
It’s desirable features are long stiff stems, brilliant crimson color, strong scent and up to 50 petals per flower. The shrubs grow to over 6’ tall and 4’ wide.
The woman’s face on your piece is beautiful (the other pieces I found had rather poorly stitched facial features creating a not-so-attractive face).
Notably, the year of the rose’s introduction (1886), the beautiful 21 year old Frances Cleveland, wife of Grover Cleveland, became First Lady of the US (1886-1889).
She was First Lady in 2 separate terms since Cleveland was our 22nd and 24th president.
Her beauty and grace was highly admired and she was very popular.
So, the rose introduction coincided with the delicately beautiful First Lady’s introduction.
It’s feasible that her likeness would be embroidered along with the rose.
I was counting 39 stars and working to connect dates of that flag....but, as Bill pointed out, there could be stars not seen because of folds in the flag....bummer, Bill! But you are right, so my “39 star” theory may or may not hold up.
But, just in case, here’s the scoop:
Any 39 star flags were probably made in the Fall of 1889, but those flags were never “official” because they were made as a result of a mis-judgement by flag makers who were assuming that “Dakota’s” admission would make 39 states.
They also assumed that Montana’s and Washington’s admission would not occur until the following July 4th.
Their assumptions were totally wrong since “Dakota” was admitted as 2 separate states: North and South Dakota and Montana and Washington were also admitted at that same time (Nov 1889).
So....all the flags prematurely made with 39 stars were “errors”, never “official”, could not be flown.
The article I read stated that there are a few very rare 39 star flags still in existence and they are collectors items.
So there’s the connections in the embroidery: American Beauty rose introduction (1886), beautiful First Lady (1886-1889 and American flag error (1889) and admission of 4 new states at the same time to the Union (1889).
Other pieces similar to yours that I found were dated late 1800s to early 1900s. One had been made into a pillow; others had unfinished edges like yours.
I think you rescued a very special piece of needlework! I love, love, love it!
Counting stars in folded flag makes no sense;it is early 20th century.
