This is my dad's steamer trunk. It has definitely seen better days. I'm thinking he had as early as 1940's during WWII, but not positive. It may have been in his family before that. I'd like to identify it maybe get a date, decide if I should get it fixed, leave it as it for future generations. It seems to be wood covered in leather. Lots of clever little hiding places. Any help in identification would be awesome. I just wish I'd asked my dad about it before he passed 20 years ago.

I am sure it is much older than that. My guess, I would say 1850's / mid 19th century. It looks to have the jenny lind shape but in leather which is interesting, don't see that everyday. I am sure Jim or Marvin could help.

I would say mid 1850's to mid 1860's, it does look like a Jenny Lind, looking at it from the end, does it have an hour glass or bread loaf shape ? if it does, it's a Jenny Lind, very nice, it could be fixed up a little with a cleaning and repair the inner cloth straps so the lid doesn't fall back, very nice.

THANK YOU so much for your quick response! Yes, greendog, it's a bread loaf shape. My brother is better at remembering family lore, so I'm also asking him if he can help with the origin. I have another chest I know is circa 1860s - that was from a great-great great grand mother/aunt on my Dad's side of the family. Again, thanks for your help!

Thanks for helping to date. My brother wasn't able to help much, but my sister thinks Dad got from elderly cousins who lived in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.
QUESTION: I would love to find a reliable repair/restoration person in Virginia. Any referrals?

Sorry I don't know anyone in that area.
