This plate is about 10" square and weighs a hefty 4 lbs and .3 ounce. Plate may not be the best description for it as it is a big chunk of glass. It has a flat ground and lightly polished base about 4" in diameter. It was purchased by a sailor serving on a ship during the Korean War (25 June 1950- 27 July 1953), while on shore leave in Japan. He purchased it for his sister who collected plates. She stored it and never displayed it. It was probably only taken out of the box two or three times to look at it. When she passed two years ago, she had many boxed plates in new condition in her collection which passed to her nephew, son of the sailor, who sold it to me. It has the original box, with excelsior packing materials and a small brochure which may be useful for dating other Iwata pieces.

That's great you are so able to date this Kevin! It helps me a lot thanks.
I really like the pure Iwata-ness of this plate. Simple but not, and it carries the lack of colour perfectly.
      Nice find :)

Thanks for your comments and links, keramikos! The seller is asking about ten times what that vase is worth, if shipping is included in the asking price. Artist pieces by the Iwata family are generally not labeled. This is factory Iwata glass and could have been made by anyone who worked in their factory.

Thanks for your comment, Karen. I hoped it would be useful.

Thanks for taking a look at my Iwata plate Watchsearcher, aura, Jenni, fortapache, Kevin Cokeman1959 and keramikos!
