These two bracelets are a bit of a mystery: I bought one online from the US and one in a thrift shop in Canada. Both are in wonderful condition. The bracelets are large and heavy. Both have tested positive for Bakelite using Simichrome.

I have seen bracelets like these online but with many different explanations. The one I bought online was listed as confetti Lucite. It appears to be a possibility. Another one stated that the bracelet was by the French designer Marion Godart. Looking at her plastic jewellery, I find this not likely. Her style is very different. I also found the same bracelet in green. This one stated that it was Prystal.

Any ideas would be very much welcome.

    Thanks for looking:)

Beautiful bracelets! What ever they are. They obviously are imitating amber :) Love the color and shape! It is sometimes hard to tell plastic from plastic. I think the word lucite also is missused when sellers don't know what they have. Sounds better than "unknown plastic", because if you are not sure what type of plastic, how can you then be sure it really is vintage items you are selling? That is why I don't trust information about things being Bakelite or Lucite in adds. Bakelite is perhaps not that hard to figure out but clear vintage plastic like Lucite must be very very hard to id from other clear modern plastics, without being a chemist? Or what is your view on that Mary? I am not debating if these bracelets are vintage or not - but thinking that sometimes it is very hard to find sure answers to what type of plastic. The bracelets are still beautiful :)

Totally agree with you, Elisabethan:) I have become better in identifying Bakelite, with the help of Simichrome and a bit of my limited experience. I have a general idea about the celluloid items, too, but I don't trust myself totally. When it comes to other plastics, I usually can tell the cheap hard plastic with seems from the rest but that's a far as it goes. And there are so many other ones out there, besides Lucite...
Thanks for taking the time to stop by:)

Mary, I took a photo of the holes. It appears to me that there are tool marks/lines visible, like the individual pieces have been cut and the outside has been polished. I put a q-tip to show the yellow result of the testing with Simichrome. It didn't turn very dark yellow, but yellow nevertheless. (The lighting in the picture wasn't very good)
      Thanks for having a look:)

As always, I love and appreciate your comments so much. There is a lot of wisdom in your words, Mary! I cannot wait to see your bracelet! That's what I love about this site: Sharing!
And I do remember Moonstonlover. She had the most beautiful jewellery posts and later switched to Czech glass. I have not seen/heard from her in a long time.
      Cheers and take care,
      Gudrun

Agree! I remember when I first found this site many years ago, her posts really stood out. She also was very kind to me helping me with some of my posts. I wish her all the best, wherever she is:)
