Our best guess is that my father-in-law brought this back from Korea in the 1950s. He was there in the army. Can anyone tell us what it is?

They are Japanese, probably Satsuma, and likely 1930s-40s.
They show the god Kannon with the immortals. The raised design is called moriage and was a feature of some Satsuma works.
I haven't checked for the actual kiln with that backstamp but if you check this site you may find it :

Other sites may also help identify the mark.

I think that's the period it was made.
