This 2 1-2" goldtone brooch shows a mermaid with green enamel fishtail sitting on a golden aurora borealis rhinestone studded half moon, with encased pink & gold glitter accents and star overhead. Signed Kirks Folly (founded 1979) ca the 1980s

Beautiful brooch- I really love the mystical motif of the stars and crescent moon. Her tail is so detailed too, I can make out every individual scale on it which is REALLY impressive. The whole fantasy scene of a mermaid sitting on the moon is great too- it reminds me of those art noveau paintings you often see. ;D

Lauren thank you for the really lovely praise my friend, you are certainly right this design does have a very art nouveau look, Kirks Folly was always very imaginative and loved to place their subjects in the heavens so why not have a mermaid swinging on the moon! Yes the tail is very pretty I agree

Really appreciate your great comment Mary thank you so much, yes the co began in 79 according to research sources, and although they retired many 80s designs like this one, they did reissue them in slightly altered form later on - for example, you can find this mermaid on moon in a smaller brooch with dangles attached, none of my KF pieces have the starry dangles which IMO give a rather childish aspect to a brooch

Mary yes indeedy the original designs are always the best, they make changes on updated designs but rarely make real improvements you know? It's kinda like movie remakes, sometimes they even go into third or fourth versions when the original was usually wonderful (maybe hoping lightning will strike again lol)
