Very curious? My first thought was an ash trap for a fireplace. Maybe a coal storage box or fire box for a stove?

It has a strange shape not being symmetrical. If you get rid of the paint scraper and repost a picture it'll be easier to image search.

Could be a cooking grill also? It looks like there's an inset where a lid or grill would sit.

I will add new photos as you have suggested. My first thought it was a latch catch for a very large heavy gate.

Seeing the diamond pattern makes me think a grill laid across there? And there is hole where a handle could have been to raise and lower the grill or heat source.

I added a few more photos but it seems on this site one has to jog back and forth to see all of them along with the conversation. I don't get on here a lot so I am not used to it. On the piece, there are some slight angles on the interior recess. Seems awfully
small for a grill though. There is a bit of cement or mortar stuck to the exterior.

Possibly a recessed bin for a wood stove to which water could be added to humidify the air.
It also might have been used as a warming bin on the wood stove.

Interesting thought. I am thinking that the water would evaporate too quickly, i.e. larger vessel needed. Something tells me it has more of an industrial application. It seems to be a small piece to a much larger operation. Incinerator, drainage, ground mounted strike catch for a heavy gate are some of my thoughts. I guess it is natural for us to think of a domestic application. On some level it seems almost obvious what it is but then it's not.

Seeing the diamond pattern makes me think it's meant to be walked on. Odd that the diamond pattern is not the same on both ends though.

I thought the same about the diamond grid....to make it non-skid, possibly because it might be stepped on.
Now I’m leaning toward the gate “drop-bar” receiver- especially since you mentioned there is some concrete on the exterior.

After some thought , the problem with the gate idea is that this thing would tend to fill up with debris and or water.

Maybe inside, such as a parking garage.

      That would work.

I posted a few more pictures. Not sure why they are not grouped on the same page or window or thread.
