Another Orsome Orange birthday present! 3-1/4" x 1-1/2" Catalin (same chemical makeup as bakelite) and wood giraffe pin. Simple brass embedded c-clasp. Pic 3 shows it had painted hooves and the 1/4" thickness of the wood base. Definitely proves that my birds are new. https://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/274284-red-lovebirds--are-they-bakelite.

These novelty pins were popular during WWII timeframe. Many wood pins, also leather and felt pins were home kits.
I found this delightful pin online for half the price of the birds - oh well. Happy October, Orange and Orsome!

      Yes, another orsome orange ornament!
How do you distinguish catalin from bakelite and how did you date this? It looks mod to me. I love how it's on a wooden backing and giraffe is styled so groovy!

Karen - thanks for your Orsome comments! Catalin and bakelite are both company names for same formula of plastic, but my research book uses the term Catalin It's a great resource: "Wooden Jewelry and Novelties" by Mary Jo Izard. She has many examples of these WWII era items. Many (not this example though) wooden jewelry items were home craft. Leather and felt pins were also popular during wartime.

Karen - also the clasp is a simple imbedded C. Not like the later clasps still used today that have the safety C clasp (like the red lovebirds).

Thank you friends for your loves: six, watchsearcher, aura, Jenni - much appreciated!

Catalin...that’s news to me. I love learning on CW!
Mary, this little giraffe is a charmer! Nearly, if not, 90 years old and looks wonderful!
I wish I knew how to date plastics...you are a wiz!

Karen - Yes, CW is a great place to learn isn't it?!

Eileen - I've loved Plastics for SO LONG. I know what to look for. There's definitely a certain look to the wood from these old pins, add to that clasp used (you know!!) and all the goodies I've looked at over the years. Hey, I don't know 10% of what you do about D&E or Julianna!

Friends thanks for the love: Vinyl, MarmorealM, Fort, Kevin, Thomas, Ben

I would love to see your other 1940’s pieces! Some true vintage would be nice.
Question p: how old should a piece be to be considered vintage@?
      IMHO—35+ years...maybe more?
    13. valentino97 valentino97, 3 months ago
Yes, Eileen - thanks I think it is 30+ years to be called vintage. Retro works for less than that and antique I believe is near to or 100 yrs. old. It's just my taste, but I don't look at or buy much newer than 1980's unless - AND this happens - it's Designer fab, Handmade fab or so ugly I can't help it fab....

Vynil thank you for your love.

This is unsigned, as we know most plastic jewelry was not signed. I am a little bummed that when I post my bakelite on CW similar items for sale online get higher prices. I thought I would comment on this again because a CW friend recently said I don't provide research.
