I was thrilled to come across this particular early 1870's leather barrel stave trunk with all its mid 1850's hardware. This particular one would have had the straps from the back, over the top to the front. Measures in at 32" Long x 20" Deep x 26" Tall. No real interior but for a 3 section lower lid compartment. Does have the original cloth ribbon lid stays. The original lining is linen then another layer added, which has an image applied to it ( the second layer). You can see it sticking out from underneath the third layer. I removed the top layer to find that this was a magazine cut out image. On the back of that image after removed revealed a tooth paste ad, which contained a date of 1883. I as hoping for a makers label as I didn't realize it had 3 layers I thought it was just two. It still maybe there somewhere under the second layer. Has the patented 1854 Conrad Liebrich Brass lock. It also has some great 1870 patented cast iron handle caps less one...tough find maybe for the fourth. The back ornate hinges are thick cast iron which was unexpected, but I was curious as what I would find as they weren't shown in the ad. The caster wheels I could see as being out of the norm and turned out to be patented Nov. 21 1856 #2 and all are present. I don't really see any markings on the hinges... maybe on the back side?? I hope you find it as interesting as I do.

Thanks Drill. I was actually just in the process of sorting & organizing your patents by item name, as I see you have done on the other trunk post. In this case it was wheels.. I just handled a patent similar to this wheel type so when I saw this one come up the wheels really caught my eye and sure enough...old! Thanks for all your patent work & sharing such info. It really helps and definitely helps one grow in understanding.

Thanks Drill, The handle caps I have very little on, Thanks for that. Those two castor patents were the ones I have and used to recognize the style on this trunk.
The handle cap 1870? Do you think they would be using 1856 castors and an 1854 lock on in the 1870's. I wonder if the handle caps were added on as a repair. I may pop one off and see if there are other nail holes from an original handle underneath. The hinges also look early, being so large & thick like that.

As a maker ,If things work and your holding inventory why not use it? Incidentally that handle cap patent shows a middle nail securing the handle. Yours doesn't have one. It's just as
close of an image as I can find. Yes, hinges are old , Just understand that many early patent image records prior to 1867 were burned up in fires so they tend to be incomplete records and non- existent on the web. I always try not to get hung up on
exact dating. If I'm in the decade ,close enough.

I have indeed learn that an exact date is impossible, a correct decade is fine by me, but sometimes I'm forced to contend with two which is more often than not which is fine as well. As for the handle caps I had also had Jim look at this trunks photos and he agreed with what you are saying. Just prior to that, I stumbled upon Jims store https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/795305535/antique-trunk-cast-iron-handle-end-caps?ref=shop_home_active_6&sca=1 and his shows the little pin in the center as well. He also directs it to the 1870 patent you came up with.. I have revised my title as I want to be as accurate as possible again with in the correct decade, not only for others but also for myself.
Cool Tom. I get it, don't get me wrong, I love trying to get as close as I can too. Sometimes that is much easier to do with a label with an address. Especially when you can research when they may have been at that location or moved. Here is a good example of patents issued in 1854 and being re-issued well into 1873
