Came across this walking on a path beside the Rupert river in Quebec Canada. It’s about 5 feet high and hallow on the inside. It has a hooky thing at the top but the bottom is smooth. Would like to know what it is and how old it is?

My first impression is that it’s part of a still.

I was going to say Civil War tent stove. But you said it has a bottom to it? If it does, then maybe it is a still?

Further that is some Classy Solid Riveting...Cheers.

It is some professional riveting. Maybe a buoy marker ? But then, it would have to be tied by the "rings" and that would only leave to rounder part showing. Any signs of waterproofing around the rivets ?

I’m wondering if the bracket like part above the opening was to loop over a cap that would have held copper tubing in place to condense alcohol vapors that were given off from whatever was boiling inside the thing.
It used to be common for home distillation of alcoholic brews.
I hope you can rescue this thing-whatever it is- it looks like it has an interesting story behind it.

I was also thinking since it's Canada. Maybe it's for maple syrup?

After you lug it home for safekeeping, how about sending the picture to a museum or 2....If it was something used in the last hundred years or so, I’m sure I would remember it.....lol.....

Even after many, many years in the open, it would show signs of being over a fire.
