I found this awesome little guy last week. It is a Japanese wooden Daruma doll.

I wasn't able to date it but I found other similar examples in Japanese auction sites listed as "vintage". If someone has more info on carvings like this, please leave a comment.

Daruma dolls are usually made of paper mache and wooden molds are used in the production process. Also, there are extremely fine antique examples of wood carved Daruma dolls that sell for considerable amounts of money.

My new friend measures 5 and a half inches high (about 14cm) by 5 inches wide. The wood is some kind of pine and it smells very good.

    Thank you for stopping by!

Edited on November 1oth, 2020: Some research made to identify the wood as Japanese cedar wood (Cryptomeria japonica - Sugi in Japanese).

This is a fantastic Daruma. The carving is so well done, he has the right attitude, the wood is beautiful. And it’s large!

Thank you recer4four, I was impressed by the carver's skills. He/she carved it in a way that follows the wood grain so perfectly aligned, with concentric circles that match the cheeks, nose and even the eyes.
