So I know the last thing I was supposed to be doing was adding to my collection. But sometimes, I believe we are called on to be stewards of artwork that is meant to survive the ages.
So that is me. A steward who is going around and doing lots of good things for the next generations. So there. Yay me!
Doesn’t that sound much nicer than a shopaholic who simply can’t stop collecting vintage jewelry that she just thinks is downright cool and happens to be affordable?
I’d love to know more about this little beauty who looks to be worth more than the 15 bucks I paid for her, but then again, let’s face it… I have no earthly idea what I’m doing. There are just things that speak to me and when they do, I buy them. Naturally, I don’t tell this to my husband because I’m pretty sure I would be talking to most of you from a secure facility if I did that, so we’ll keep it relatively quiet, ok?

In late 19th century the opening of the suez canal and of the starting of the orient express made the orient popular in Europe. This oriental looking lady would have been a popular subject for a painting.

Oh Eileen...please do!!! Gol-thank you for that insight...Gillian-I thought so as well! For some reason the name "Trombone" comes to mind as the name for the clasp but I could be (and usually am) totally wrong. HAHAHA
I love this fantastic brooch for several resons. First I agree it is very cool. I love brooches beacuse you can wear them as art and this one even looks like a classical painting with a picture frame. Like a small version of a large painting that would hang on the castle wall :). Made in France which the mark shows. It has a "trobone catch" and those were first patented circa 1850. Don't know the age of your brooch. Would need to hold it and examine it more to make a guess. Maybe someone here knows more about french costume jewelry and can give us a guess. When was that type of frame popular? What material is the painting? Is is painted or enameled? Is this a romantic revival made later to look older? I get all kind of questions in my head... :) but no answer. But I would also have bought it! Lovely.
