Here is a 5x5" chocolate slag glass wood duck that was originally designed by Royal Hickman for Heisey Glass ca 1947-1949, reissued by Imperial Glass between 1969-1977. Photo #4 shows the raised IG imprint on its side

Chocolate always yum, even in glass, and as a duck.

Lovely deep dark brown colour- I especially love the little lighter swirls through it. But, is slag glass another word for those off cuts of glass that were reused? If so that's really neat that they could make something like this out of it! I love the really formal pose too- he's a duck 'full of a sense of his own importance' I think! :P

Thank you Karen for your fabulous comment, of course now you've got me thinking of those big chocolate duck molds and wouldn't this slag duck be a perfect specimen - with a blend of white chocolate highlights (actually I'm more of a white choc person because it's sweeter, but I like both)! I'm really glad you liked this Heisey-Imperial fella, he's got that deco style design you could always count on from Royal Hickman of Heisey, he made the most elegant glass animals

Mary thank you for the kind praise, this guy certainly looks sweet enough to eat - perhaps would have been a better Easter post, but chocolate Santas are just around the corner!

Yes Lauren he is certainly a haughty looking duck, he's actually quite wide bodied too which I think shows up in the photos. There is alot online about slag glass bit they use it to make lamps & home construction so it was hard to find a good definition, here is the most apt I felt..."glass with two or more colors in a marble-like pattern." The whitish streaks do kind of have a marble effect, do you think? Being this duck reissue dates from the 70s, I could only find this brown slag or clear glass, which is no contest for me I always prefer colored glass to plain clear, I have trouble photographing that it's too transparent & muddled the detail, in my pix anyway. Thank you for your always wonderful compliments

Thank you so much Phil for your fantastic kind words for Royal Hickman's model of this wood duck, he was the master glass artisan for Heisey in the 40s-50s era, and the word I think best describes his work is "stylish", all his glass animals had great details & a flourish to them, I'm lucky to have several of the reissues and really treasure them

Thank you MrsT for the lovely compliments and I'm so glad you liked the slag details on this duck, I had to photograph this several times because often the brown color dominated the slag highlights & I finally got it right I hope. Very grateful for the love too, you are such a nice person with always a kind word :)

Aw Scott what terrific compliments, thank you so much!! I try to find interesting animals in nice poses to add to my "zoo," it's just difficult to find variety the glassmakers seemed to have favorite popular animals, but this duck had a really super artist Royal Hickman who was one of the best
