I bought this item from Japan and it was sold as a Meiji/Taisho era brush wash. I don't know if that is correct and haven't found any answers to support yes or no.
It's been moulded from clear glass to represent a fishing boat with a bamboo cover and three birds, one with a fish. The glass has been hand painted, and I have to say the paint is still really durable and bright.
Why a brush wash? I think the ribbed base of the boat is designed to hold water and rub a brush over to remove excess paint. It is not like any brush wash I have seen before but I can see that it would be effective.
I do believe it to be pre-war but whether it is as early as Meiji/Taisho I don't know.
TBH I am not totally sure it's even Japanese.
It's quirky and different and for now remains a puzzle.
    I'm happy to have it.

Oh my Karen, what a fantastic "birdie" boat! I adore this beautiful piece in so many ways, the gorgeous colorful glass birds, the bamboo housing & lovely colored ribbing, altogether truly exquisite and an awesome find

Yeah, it's interesting Kevin. Keeps me amused and if I ever get bored I can do more searching!

Thanks Jenni, always with a great comment. I love colour and it abounds in my house so this fits right it. Different enough to not get lost though!

It is well made Phil as you say, and the modeling of the birds is delightful. Bright and happy altogether!
Thanks mate, hope you are staying well.
